Last year I had the privilege to be interviewed by Alex Eliseev for the IMechE’s Professional Engineering Magazine. We had a super fun chat about my career, right back to where my interest in motorcycles came from and the journey I’ve been on in my life so far. I just thought I’d share this article for a really well written piece on me! Link to the article: https://www.imeche.org/news/news-article/engineering-extremes-motorbikes-rock-music-and-engineering I hope you enjoy reading this, please leave me any comments if you’ve got any questions! I also wanted to thank Alex and the Professional Engineering magazine again for covering my story. Emilie The Female Engineer
After my blog overhaul and relaunch, I thought it would be an ideal time to dive into my career journey from a motorcycle mechanic through to my current role as a mechanical engineer… My route into engineering wasn’t the most straight-forward, and I am a real advocate for being brave and switching careers if you find you aren’t in a field that is the right fit for you. There are so many jobs out there and you spend so much of your life working, I really believe that you can find a career which is fulfilling and that you love waking up for everyday. I’m going to split this into years and stages of my career, to try and give a real overview of how and why I’ve got to where I have got to up until this point. Hopefully this will be a useful motivation bump if you’re trying…
After 12 months of a combination of furloughment, working from home and popping into the office for a day at a time to check on my engines, this week is my first full week back in the office. I hadn’t been in the office since before Christmas due to the third UK lockdown, so this readjustment as JCB have brought back all of their staff permanently got me in a reflective mood. I am going to share my seven benefits of working from home, which I believe can contribute massively to job satisfaction and both physical and mental wellbeing. I will also talk about the downsides to working from home, which have undoubtedly been exasperated due to the pandemic and the minimised social interactions we are all facing on a daily basis. Benefits of Working from Home Personally, I have really enjoyed my experience of working from home, and I…
Are you looking for ways to boost your engineering career, whilst also giving back to your community and inspiring the next generation of engineers? Volunteering as a STEM ambassador is an incredible way to achieve all three of these goals! In this article I will explain what a STEM ambassador is, five key benefits to volunteering and finally I will share details on how to join the program (when I’ve managed to convince you to sign up!). Hopefully this will give a great insight into the STEM Ambassador programme, which I have been a part of since I joined JCB back in 2015. This year I received my 50 hours of volunteering certificate, which I am very proud of. My STEM Ambassador certificate for 50 hours of volunteering with the programme so far As a disclaimer for my readers outside of the UK, this is heavily focussed on the British…
This week is National Apprenticeship Week in the UK, which is a government-led celebration of all things apprenticeships aiming to showcase this career option. I will mostly be talking about engineering higher apprenticeships as this is where my experience lies, but a lot of the discussion will be relevant to apprenticeships in all fields and levels (particularly STEM careers). I am going to take you through my personal experience of apprenticeships, discuss the careers options that are available and ultimately explain why I think an apprenticeship is the best way into a career in engineering. Tip: You can search #NAW2021 for great apprenticeship content across all social media platforms. Firstly, I would be interested to find out what your route was into your career, regardless of what your career is or if you’re still on the route to this career. There are so many different routes that you could possibly…
